people. In it there is a philosophical value that continues to
be embedded in the cultural memory of Balinese—whereas
geographically, coconut trees are identical to tropical climates,
where the sunlight is abundant. The various layers of meaning
contained in the activities and methods of Donal’s painting
now consciously pour into the choice of visual languages that
tend to remain based on aspects of beauty that are easily felt
universally by various groups. “I am aware of being a painter, so I
am conscious of using aspects and potential aspects of painting
as a form to convey my statement,” he told this writer. He views
painting as part of the culture of society. He wants to present
things that may look simple, natural and beautiful (in the view of
lay people) with the hope that it is the entrance for them to be
able to respond to the deeper ideas in each of his paintings.
Thus a little reading on the work of four artists who appear in
this INNER GAZING exhibition. This introduction is intended to
be an entry point to seeing the work and ideas that are presented
by the four entries in this exhibition. Of course, this short essay
is only a guide. All art lovers bring their own unique perspectives
and sensibilities that stretch in their minds and their horizons.
