For someone like Kenyem,
who spent nearly all of his life in Sayan village north
of Ubud, it is easier to listen to the whistling sound
of bamboo leaves conversing with the wind. And to see a
drop of dew clinging to the tip of a leaf, shining like
a drop of sweat due to a beam of sunlight. It blinds the
eye for a moment before completely vanishing, sipped by
the universe. Changing seasons take place every six months,
happening in before the eyes, without invitation. And they
cannot be rejected. --Excerpt from "Sujana,
Trees, and Totoro",
an introduction for the exhibition catalog.
Just like leaves, people live together with
each other in a big tree on earth, swaying with the wind
of life and finally dying, falling like dried leaves. Each
human being is different in appearance and character, but
in essence all of them are just the same, with one faith
and destiny. --Excerpt from the artist's
statement.
